Special Guest Artist: Rosangela Silvestre
Choreographer, instructor, dancer and creator of the Silvestre Dance Technique, Rosangela is a native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Rosangela has researched dance and music in Brazil, India, Egypt, Senegal and Cuba as part of her ever-evolving and eclectic palette of movement. She acquired training in such diverse techniques as: Martha Graham, Limón, Horton, Floor Bar, Classic Ballet, Dunham Technique, and has experienced diverse dance expressions including Germany Theater Dance, Contemporary, Folkloric, as well as Traditional dances of Africa and other continents. Rosangela has instructed seminars and residencies all over the world, and choreographed numerous dance pieces for companies based in Brazil - Balé Folclórico da Bahia and Odunde - as well as Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Ballet Hispanico Repertory Company, American Academy of Ballet, Roots of Brazil, Dance Brazil, Viver Brasil, Muntu Dance Theater, and the Kendra Kimbrough Dance Company.

The Oak
Featuring the Chinkapin Oak, the very tree we will be planting on April 22 at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in a special dance-planting ceremony with live music! Special thanks to Tree Utah for donating this tree so we can serenade and fall in love with this beautiful Oak before we dance-plant it! Come join us on April 22!

Iroko
Acknowledging the Ancestral Presence in all trees, giving protection and calling attention to what is happening with humanity in relation with the destruction of nature. Movement and rhythm inspired by Iroko, a tree spirit from African-Brazilian folklore. Iroko contains all the Orisha inside him, and connects earth and sky.

Magalenha
A popular song in Brazil, written by Sergio Mendes and made famous by Carlinhos Brown. The song and dance reference the Xaxado tradition of Northeast Brazil.
Malandro do Tambor Chamejante
Lorin Hansen, world Malandro Samba Champion, accompanies herself on the Tamborim drum, followed by a dance solo to the song, Malandro written by Jorge Aragão and Joao Batista de Alcantra, and made famous by singer Elza Soures, who recently passed away.
Cadência Do Samba
“I want to die in the beautiful cadence of Samba”
A group choreography in the Malandro style, featuring the song, “Cadência Do Samba” composed by Ataulfo Alves. Choreography by Lorin Hansen. Samba Fogo took this piece to Los Angeles in the Summer of 2019 to compete at International Samba Congress and won the contest unanimously.

Inspired by Xangô, African-Brazilian folkloric God of fire, drums, thunder and lightning.

Frevo Mulher
Danced in the “Frevo” style of Northeastern Brazil. The dancer wears a shirt with the flag of Pernambuco, the state with the largest Carnaval gathering in Brazil. Song composed by Ze Ramalho.

The beautiful song about Brazil’s many beauties, the “watercolor” of Brazil. Song composed by Silas De Oliveira, arranged by Lorin Hansen and Mason Aeschbacher.
